Licorice has been used for centuries as a remedy for all kinds of respiratory problems. It haspowerful anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, and anti-asthmatic properties, and plays a pivotal role in treating the common cold, cough and flu symptoms. It also thins and slackens phlegm deposits within the chest and nasal cavities and hence eases breathing and helps the body to get rid of mucus. It is also beneficial in treating bronchitis and asthmatic condition

For chest and respiratory troubles especially plegm, prepare a licorice decoction with Fenugreek seeds – add two cups of water to a pan, 1 tsp fenugreek seeds and 1/4 of a cm stick of licorice – boil for 6 to 10 minutes and keep topping up water if it goes down too much. Strain and drink half a cup of this liquid very warm with some honey as it is bitter and put into fridge until finished. Recycle the seeds.
